National Women’s Health Policy
The Australian Government is developing a new National Women’s Health Policy.
It has been almost 20 years since the last National Women’s Health Policy was developed. The Policy will focus on encouraging specific health services for women and actively promoting participation of women in health decision making and management.
Developing a Women's Health Policy for Australia - Setting the Scene outlines why the Government is developing a National Women's Health Policy and what the Government wants the policy to achieve. It gives an overview of health issues affecting women.
The Government will undertake consultations with consumers, the community, health service providers, and State and Territory governments to make sure that the National Women's Health Policy builds on the successes of the previous National Women's Health Policy and meets the varied needs of all Australian women at all ages.
National Men’s Health Policy
The Australian government is also in the process of developing a National Men’s Health Policy that will focus on reducing barriers men experience in accessing health services, tackling widespread reticence to seek treatment, and raising awareness of preventable health problems that affect men.
This will be the first time that Australia will have a National Men’s Health Policy. A draft policy was developed in 1996. The new National Men’s Health Policy will build on the principles in the 1996 draft policy which were developed after consultation across Australia.
The National Men’s Health Policy is expected to be finalised in 2009. Information about the development of the policy is available on the Department of Health and Ageing’s website. This website will be updated with new information and papers as the consultation progresses.
